Kherson

The territory of modern Kherson has been occupied for a long time. In 1737 on the place of present Kherson there was the Russian fortification Alexander-Shants that was constructed during the Russian-Turkish war in 1735-1739

The city of Kherson has been based by the decree of Ekaterina the 2nd from the 18th of June 1778. The city was created to protect the Southern boundaries of the Russian Empire. The name to the city was given in honor of Ancient Greek, and later after the Byzantine colony Chersonese. The Kherson region is located in the south of Ukraine, in the river basin of the river Dnepr, in the southwest it is washed by the Black Sea and in the southeast it is washed by the Azov Sea. The frontier that is 458 km goes through the territory of the city. On the frontier there are 4 check posts – the airport, river port, seaports of Kherson and Skladovsk.

The reserves "Askaniya-Nova" and Chernomorskyi are reserves of the national value.

The Kherson fortress occupies the territory that is almost 100 hectares. The management of the building of the city building and fortresses was entrusted to the talented engineer, Colonel Nikolay Ivanovichu Korsakovu. The big sum of money was spent for building of this fortress.
